Twin Paradox is a thought experiment in physics. It was proposed by genius Albert Einstein. But do you know, there exist few references to this in our mythology.
There is a story in Srimad Bhagavatam. The story goes like this:-
“There was a king, Kakudmi, who had a beautiful daughter, Revati. Feeling that no human could prove to be good enough to marry his lovely and talented daughter, Kakudmi took Revati with him to Brahmaloka – abode to Brahma. When they arrived, Brahma was listening to a musical performance by the Gandharvas. So, they waited patiently until the performance was over.Then, Kakudmi bowed humbly. However, he made his request and presented his shortlist of candidates. Brahma laughed loudly. He explained that time runs differently on different planes of existence. Hence, during that short time they had waited in Brahmaloka to see him. In fact, during this, 27 chatur-yugas had passed on Earth. So, he suggested togo back and marry off his daughter to Balarama, the elder brother of Krishna.”
If you carefully read this story, there are some interesting points worth pondering.
First, even though Revathi was born millions of years before Balarama, during their marriage time she was still young! How is this possible? When Kakudmi and Revathi were in Brahma’s world, their age was changing according to the world of Brahma; not Earth! In today’s science, we call it “Twin Paradox”. It has its explanation within the framework of “relativity theory”.
Second, Kakudmi took his daughter to Lord Brahma’s world. This is an inter-stellar space travelling.
Now the question arrises as to what are these two scientific concepts:-
Albert Einstein’s twin paradox is one of the most famous thought experiments in physics. The thought experiment goes like this. If you send one of two twins on a trip to a star at near light speed, they will be younger than their identical sibling when they return home. However, the age difference is a consequence of something called time dilation. In fact, this is described by Einstein’s special theory of relativity: the faster you travel, the slower time appears to pass.
INTERSTELLAR SPACE TRAVELLING:-
However, Interstellar travel would be much more difficult than interplanetary spaceflight. Whereas the distances between the planets in the Solar System are less than 30 astronomical units (AU), the distances between stars are typically hundreds of thousands of AU, and usually expressed in light-years. Because of the vastness of those distances, practical interstellar travel based on known physics would need to occur at a high percentage of the speed of light; even so, travel times would be long, at least decades and perhaps millennia or longer.
So, among these two scientific concepts the twin paradox theory has already had a world wide acceptance, though scientists are still working on it to give it an experimental proof. But the interstellar travel is still a milestone for the researchers. Because it requires an object to move with a speed equal to the speed of light. Till today travelling with a speed of light seems to be impossible. But with the advancement of quantum theory has provided a hope for it to happen in the nearby future.
Whatever be the truth, at least those people were thinking beyond what most of the scientists couldn’t even comprehend just a decade ago.
So, the overall point of this article was, the theories and concepts that scientists are discovering now already existed in our mythology (when science was not at all that much advanced). So, the stories that we are reading in mythology are not just fictions, rather it holds some reality, which science have proven upto certain limit and yet a lot to be discovered yet.
