QUANTUM MECHANICS: SPOOKY AND WEIRD PHYSICS

Quantum mechanics can be really weird sometimes. One of the weirdest things here is superposition. Superposition is a phenomenon in quantum mechanics in which tiny objects can exist in multiple states at the very same time. However, it’s quite funny that noone actually knows what happens in a superposition.

WEIRD FACTS ABOUT QUANTUM MECHANICS:

The weird fact about superposition is: it can occur even if there is only one tiny object. The common notion is that it occurs between two firing objects at two parallel slits in a barrier. However, those objects can act as waves as well as particles. So, they either interfere with themselves or cancel each other out in the process. But as said earlier, the superposition occuring with only one tiny object is quite startling. In this process, the particle somehow passes through both slits at the same time. However, it interferes with itself.

THE OBSERVER EFFECT IN QUANTUM MECHANICS:

However, the very act of measuring the particle can affect the whole experiment. That’s really weird indeed. This is called collapse of the wave function of the particle. One cannot explain superposition by looking into the experiment itself. If one does tries to intervene, the whole thing vanishes. Physicist Avshalom Elitzur termed this occurence as something really fishy. He stated that one isn’t allowed to measure it. That is what makes quantum physics so diabolical.

AHARONOV’S APPROACH:

Aharonov deduced a process by which one can deduce something about quantum mechanics before measuring them. He called this approach two-state vector formalism of quantum mechanics. His concept will surprise you as he said quantum events are in some sense determined by some quantum states in the future. It means quantum mechanics works both in the forward and backward direction of time the same way. This idea leads us to another very strange effect called retrocausation.

WHAT IS RETROCAUSATION:

Retrocausation states the concept the idea that the effect can occur before the cause. However, it totally contradicts our day to day notion that effect occurs only after the cause.

WHAT IS POSTSELECTION:

Postselection is a method in which physicists don’t measure where the particle will end up. Instead they choose a particular place where they can look for it. According to experiments, it provides more information than any other method. So, what is the weird thing here? Here it appears as if the physicist is himself causing the particle to be where it is now.

So, these were some weird quantum mechanics stuff. Obviously, it’s weird, but one can also find beauty in that weirdness of it.
